Taking out the Trash

City workers help local residents unload during the citywide cleanup.

STAUNTON - Residents who had an excess amount of trash or items to be rid of had a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning this last weekend.

This year's citywide cleanup was held Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19, with city workers on hand to help unload and sort the trash for disposal. Local residents had only to load up their items in a truck and take them to the public works building.

The city of Staunton bids out the actual trash pickup itself.

This year, Robert Sanders Waste Systems provided the dumpsters for the loads with each dumpster holding a different kind of trash.

In addition, residents will now be able to sign up for Robert Sanders for their regular trash pickup.

Residents were allowed to bring in any items except for building materials like drywall to be disposed of.

Other items, such as tires, were not accepted at the cleanup.

Those elderly residents who could not deliver the loads themselves could call ahead of time and sign up for pickup by a volunteer from the city council.

The citywide cleanup is held twice a year and is open to local residents only.

It's a great way to help cleanup the town through a community project.
