Students Learn Life Lesson From Collecting Soda Tabs

Pat Hughes and Pat Bradley (back row) celebrate with St. Michael's Kindergarten Class, who collected 62.45 pounds of tabs

STAUNTON - Most people that drink soda out of the can never stop to consider the pop tab. It's a fairly inconspicuous part of the can, and to most people doesn't have much value beyond opening the can. The students at St. Michael's think otherwise, and managed to collect an impressive 252.9 pounds of them to donate.

The tabs were donated to the Ronald McDonald House organization to help pay housing bills for those families in need. The organization helps families who have members who have special medical needs by providing temporary housing for them while they receive treatment.

This is St. Michael's first year collecting tabs for the organization. The school held a contest to see which class could collect the most tabs. The kindergarten class took 1st place with 62.45 pounds. The 1st place class was given a pizza party for their outstanding work.

Pat Hughes and Pat Bradley, who volunteer at Ronald McDonald House, were on hand to award the pizza party to the kindergarten class for taking first place in the contest.

The second grade class took 2nd place with 61.27 pounds, losing by only a mere pound. Fortunately, teachers later discovered that the second grade class had a box of tabs uncounted, and so the local Dairy Queen donated dilly bars to the school to reward the children for their efforts.

It is important to teach children the importance of helping those in need, and with any luck the children at St. Michael's will take this lesson to heart.
