Staunton Elementary School 28th Second Grade Olympics
The 28th Second Grade Olympics with 85 enthusiastic second graders took place on Fri., May 11, at the Staunton Elementary School. The clouds came, but this humid weather became a pleasant afternoon for the young Olympians. Andrew Masinelli had the honor of carrying the United States flag, leading the parade of second graders with event signs to the football field. Anni Dustman made her appearance carrying the Official Olympic Torch. After making a lap around the track, she handed the torch to Mrs. Gregory who then announced, "Let the Olympic Games begin!" At the Awards Ceremony, Mrs. Goldasich, Mrs. Buffington, and Mrs. Lenzen assisted Mr. Skertich, the elementary principal, as he presented the Olympic medals to the winners of the 21 different events. Following this ceremony, refreshments of cookies and punch, provided by the parents, were served in the cafeteria. A Big Thank You goes to the community people who served as judges. Without you the students would not be able to participate in this program. Another Big Thank You!!! goes to these local businesses. The First National Bank of Staunton, Heritage Manor, and Madison Telephone Company sent an abundant number of judges for the Second Grade Olympics this year. The second grade teachers and all of the second grade students appreciate this community involvement with the school program.
