Staunton's Patriot Club sings through American history

Staunton's Patriot Club sings through American history.

STAUNTON - Normally, history isn't a very interesting subject to a child.

Facts and dates don't hold the attention of a 5th grader for very long, or any other young child for that matter.

This begs the question "How do you teach history to a child?"

The answer is simple, you make them sing it.

The 5th grade Patriot Club entertained family and friends Friday, May 18 with a combination of history lesson and singing concert, using each song to illustrate a different and interesting fact about American history.

Calling it "Singing Through American History," The Patriot Club touched on the origin of the Color Guard, the national anthem, slavery, and even the song "Yankee Doodle."

The Patriot Club also gave a very impressive lesson on the origin of square dancing, complete with a demonstration by some members.

The 5th grade band was also on hand to provide music for the song "Eagle Summit March."

The Patriot Club worked hard on the production; it showed in their excellent performance.

Hopefully, this more animated history lesson will stay with them and all those who got a chance to see them in action.
