Meet Your Volunteer Firefighters

STAUNTON - Volunteer firefighters join the fire department for many different reasons. SFPD firefighter Dave Wells fulfilled his childhood dream when he joined the Staunton Fire Protection District as a volunteer in May, 2007. As a child, Wells took many trips to the West Peoria Fire Station with his grandfather who served as Chief of the department for years. Ever since making those trips to the fire station with his grandfather, Wells looked forward to being able to serve in his community as a volunteer firefighter, so last year when several SFPD volunteers approached him to join the SFPD, he jumped at the chance.

Challenger has arrived

GLEN CARBON - Even as gas hits $4 a gallon, Dodge has started delivering the Challenger muscle car. The car is already in big demand.  Even though it was well past 6 p.m. Friday, a crowd gathered around the bright-orange muscle car as it was driven from the transport trailer at Cassens and Sons here. Community Pulling Together to Help 3-year old With eye Cancer

MARINE - Evan Howell, of Marine, is in need of help, and thanks to some wonderful volunteers here that help seems to be getting closer. The three-year-old has been diagnosed with cancer in both eyes. In order to help him get treatment that may help him to keep part of his sight, friends and neighbors pitched together Sunday, and to find the funds needed to make this happen.  The sun was bright and the Marine Fireman Park was packed with people waiting to ride ponies, have their faces painted, or to watch Harry the Juggler.  The event took on a family-like atmosphere as they listened to the music of The 3rd Degree Band. People lined up to buy raffle tickets and food as the Alhambra JC's barbecued for the event.  All the proceeds of this benefit will be used to help with Evan's medical treatments. This tiny community is pulling to assist a youngster who needs more help. More information may be obtained by calling Kelly Tracy at 618-520-8919. Donations can also be made to Team Evan at Bradford Bank in Marine.
