First Responders Save Baby's Life
BUNKER HILL — First responders from Bunker Hill saved the life of a toddler who had fallen into a fish pond near Dorsey on Saturday around 6:58 p.m. The toddler apparently had followed a sibling out of the house and fell into the fish pond that was about two feet deep. The father of the child, Robert Watkins, pulled the child out of the pond and began CPR. The Bunker Hill Fire Department arrived and took over. EMT Dustin Dahmer, and an advisor of the Explorer Post, as well as EMT Paul Davis started CPR and continued until the Alton Memorial Hospital ambulance arrived. "The baby was blue and very limp when we arrived; we continued CPR and he had a heartbeat when Alton Memorial arrived," said Dahmer. Dahmer’s wife Sonya and Davis rode in the ambulance to help as the child was taken to the hospital. The child started breathing on his own at the hospital and was taken to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Dahmer gave credit to everyone involved from the paramedics from Alton Memorial to fellow firefighter Nick Buertels to Fire Chief Mark Vaughn. "Alton Memorial did a fantastic job. They put a breathing tube in him and used advanced skills that we aren’t allowed to do. It all worked together," he said, "from the 911 dispatcher to the bystanders, the EMTs and Alton Memorial personnel." "If people don’t believe in miracles this will make them believe," he added.
