Alhambra Resident and Jaycee's Support Troops

By Freddie Riepshoff

John Hurst of Alhambra wanted to do something for the troops serving in Iraq.

Hurst is an accomplished song writer/ singer with the band, Neon Ponies.

He and musician, Gorden "Finny" Bavarski of the Larry Eyman and The Country Club Band, put together a selection of country western and patriotic songs written and performed by Hurst.

Musician John Hurst (left) presents a check for $1000 to Brian Highlander, President of the Alhambra Jaycees. This check was possible due to the benevolence of Mr. Hurst donating 100 CD’s of his music to be sold and the money to go toward sending care packages for our troops in Iraq.

Copies of the CD’s may be heard on John Hurst’s web site at: www.neonponies.com .

The CD’s were sold with all of the proceeds going to the Alhambra Jaycee’s to be used for care packages for the troops.

The 100 CD’s were sold by the 1984 Unit of Livingston Ladies Auxiliary and Jim’s IGA in Livingston and the Alhambra Jaycees.

Sales went quickly with all CD’s being sold out in a month.

Many organizations donated checks to the fund and businesses and banks in the area have collection boxes up for anyone wishing to donate food items or other supplies to be added to the care packages.

The Alhambra Jaycees will be purchasing items such as microwave popcorn, potato chips, cookies, candy, wipes, travel shampoos and various personal care products to put in the care packages.

They are speaking with returning vets to find the items the troops need most.

Money collected through the 1984 Unit of Livingston Ladies Auxiliary will be used to buy phone cards so the men and women will have the opportunity to call home and talk to their families.

Donations of cash have so far come to $1500.

The Jaycee’s will be accepting donations through May 20 and are hoping to increase this amount before they start buying the items to be sent.

Anyone wishing to donate may send checks to the Alhambra Jaycee’s at P.O. Box 32, Alhambra, Ill. 62001. For items to be donated contact, Don Maine (618- 488-7368), Patty Take (618-488-7020) or Brian Highlander (618-635- 5657). Please designate Troop Packages on check.
